DN Girls have chance to win late, fall 36-35 to Eureka

The Del Norte girls had a chance to win the game with 10 seconds left, but a missed shot rebounded by Eureka gave the Loggers a 36-35 victory at home on Friday.

"It was a battle," said Del Norte head coach Jeff Cook.

Victory has eluded the Warriors through their first three conference games, but the team seems to be inching closer and closer towards its first league victory of the season.

After falling by 15 points to Arcata, Del Norte has lost by 3 to McKinleyville and now 1 point to Eureka.

"We are getting closer," Cook said. "The girls are gaining confidence. We are competing like we said we would, we just haven't gotten a W yet."

Once again, the Warriors leaned on their defense, especially early. Del Norte held Eureka to just four points in the first quarter.

The Warriors had trouble putting the ball in the basket however. Del Norte's shooting has plagued it throughout the league season and that continued on Friday.

"Once again, our shots weren't falling. It's the same old story," Cook said.

Sophomore guard Regin Loftin came of the bench for the second straight game and again led the Warriors in scoring Cook said.

Full statistics were not available at the time the paper went to press.

The loss drops the Warriors back to .500 at 8-8 overall this year. They are 0-3 in the Humbolt-Del Norte Big 5.

Del Norte will take the weekend off and travel to Hoopa for some non-league competition on Tuesday.
