Night of roller derby includes co-ed bout following the Tsunami Sirens home opener today
The North Coast Roller Derby is preparing to host its first bouts of the season with a doubleheader today.
The Tsunami Sirens will kick things off with a bout against the SINtral Valley Sinners at 6 p.m. in the Del Norte County Fairgrounds main building. The second bout of the evening will feature a co-ed bout between the Elitist Scumbags and the Co-ed Clippers.
The bout between the Sirens and the Sinners will be the first ever between the two clubs, though it has been long in the making.
"This team has been trying to play us since before we were bouting," said Adrianna Full Metal Jackie" Stefko.
The Sirens are entering their third full year as a team, and they have seen most of the Roller Derby teams around California, but the Sinners are still a bit of a mystery.
"I don't know any of these people," Stefko said. "I have only skated against one of the people, and she was skating with a different team. It is really weird for me to play a central California team and to have no idea who any of the players are."
From what the Sirens have heard, however, today's bout should be a physical one.
"We don't have any history with them," Stefko said. "We have a couple friends that have played them that have a little bit of a love-hate relationship. But it is uncharted waters for us."
The second game of the double header will feature a brand new co-ed team in the Elitist Scumbags.
The Scumbags will be made up of Tsunami Sirens skaters Stefko and Danielle "Ragin' Reg" Arispe. The team will also include Arispe's husband, Sloppy Joe, who is the line coach for the Sirens.
The rest of the women on the team will be the same women that skated with the Sirens in their first bout of the season against Humboldt Roller Derby.
