The 46th annual Jaycees Boys Basketball Tournament is less than a week away, beginning next Friday. With it comes the promise of one of the busiest weekends around Del Norte.

The Jaycees tournament is the season finale for the eighth grade boys basketball teams that come from far and wide to participate in the 56-team event.

The tournament last two days, includes seven divisions, spans across eight gyms from Redwood to Smith River, and also includes a cheerleading competition on Saturday

"Every motel fills, all the restaurants are full of kids eating, some teams even rent a vacation rental and stay in a house," said Jaycees director John Phillips.

Basketball will begin on Friday in both high school gyms, both Crescent Elk gyms, the Redwood gym, the Smith River gym, the Four Square Church gym and the Smith River Baptist Church gym.

The cheerleading competition will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the main gym at the high school. In the other high school gym, the boys will have a select player from each team compete against one another in a shooting competition.
