Del Norte Youth Wrestling holds annual invitational as fundraiser for the program

The Warrior Youth Wrestling Club will be competing at home this season in the annual Del Norte Youth Wrestling Invitational.

The invitational is expected to draw seven youth programs from around the Humbolt-Del Norte area as well as three teams from Oregon.

The Del Norte Youth Wrestling program has gotten off to a strong start through its first two tournaments of the season. In Fortuna, there was no team score, but 25 of the 29 Warriors that wrestled finished in the top three, including 14 first place finishers. In Arcata, Del Norte won the team championship with 12 first place medals and 18 top three finishes.

"We have had a really good start to the season," said Youth Wrestling president Clinton Schaad. "The kids are working hard and having a lot of fun doing it. We are pretty happy with how they have performed. We have had a lot of guys finish first and second."

Del Norte currently has 40 kids on the roster, though not all of them are able to compete at every tournament.

"Having 40 kids registered is pretty good numbers," Schaad said. "We are happy with that, but we are hoping that next year we can get the word out a little more and try to grow those numbers."

Wrestling is expected to start at 10 a.m. with peewee wrestlers first.

"It's a lot of fun to watch the little ones go out there," Schaad said. "It is pretty exciting and some of those kids are pretty good. They can do things that are pretty amazing for a 5-year-old."

Schaad said that the tournament will likely last until about 4 p.m. The tournament will serve as a fundraiser for the program. Sweatshirts by Custom Dezign Graphics will be available for purchase.
