Boys and girls teams both take first place in first home meet of the season

The first Humboldt-Del Norte track and field meet of the season was a huge success for both the boys and girls Del Norte track and field teams.

The girls finished in first place for the third time in three meets so far this season with a score of 142. The girls just barely edged out second-place Arcata, which scored 139. Both Del Norte and Arcata were well ahead of the rest of the pack with third place Eureka scoring just 82 team points.

The Del Norte boys had a little bit larger margin of victory, scoring 127.5 team points to beat second-place Fortuna by 22.5 points.

"In terms of how we looked, I was pleased," said Del Norte head coach Samuel Escobar. "It is nice to see kids perform and do what they are being told. I think most of them are pleased with their results. It is a building block. We will go from here."

Although the Warriors took first place as a team, they didn't take first place at many events.

The boys team did most of their damage in the field events. The team's only first place finish came in the long jump. Chad Bell, the returning HDN league champion in the event, blew away the competition with a first-place jump of 20-06. Austin Healy was the closest to Bell, finishing second with a jump of 19-00.

Bell also led the Warriors in the pole vault, taking second place with a jump of 10 feet. Del Norte's Daniel Standring and Jonathon Martinez also cleared 10 feet to finish third and fourth respectively. Jackson Evans rounded out the top five in pole vault with a jump of 9-06.

The Warriors also took second through sixth place in the high jump. Jackson Evans led the Warriors with a jump of 5-foot-10, just two inches below the winner. Brandon Weiser, Josh Gruden, Glenn Duncan and Parker Dantzman finished in third, fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

Duncan also took second in the triple jump with a distance of 37-07.5.

On the track, Victor De los Santos led the Warriors with a pair of second place finishes in the hurdle events. De los Santos ran a 17.56 110 meter hurdle race and ran the 300 meter hurdles in 43.62.

The girls were led by a trio of first-place finishers at the meet.

Grace Bruschi followed up her third-place finish in the shot put with a first-place finish in the discus. Her throw of 96-02 was 6-feet-2-inches farther than her teammate Kira Standring's throw. Standring finished in second

Kayla Costello was once again impressive in the hurdles. She finished second in the 100 meter hurdles, getting edged out late by Arcata's Lauren McCoy by 0.27 seconds. Costello rebounded by leading an impressive Del Norte top-four sweep of the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 48.43. Sandra De Leon Mendoza, Kayla Cain and Emily Holt were the next three girls to cross the finish line.

Jordan Babich won the triple jump for the second time in as many tries. Her jump of 30-08 was more than two-feet longer than second place.

The Del Norte track and field team will be back in action on Saturday as they head to Oregon for the Brookings-Harbor Rotary for a 10 a.m. start.
