Del Norte wins first team title of season at DN Golf Course; Lockwood still undefeated
The Del Norte golf team kicked off its spring break with its first team victory of the season.
The Warriors set the pace at the Del Norte Golf Course on Monday with a team score of 428, beating McKinleyville by 14 strokes and Eureka by 20 as all nine teams from the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 and Little 4 made their annual trip to Del Norte.
"The weather was really nice on the front nine, then it got a little bit chilly on the back, but it was perfect conditions and the course is in great shape," said Del Norte coach Chris Rice, who filled in for head coach Kirk Burrows on Monday.
Kobie Lockwood's undefeated sophomore campaign was in jeopardy on Monday, but he came through in the end. Lockwood shot par 71 to edge out St. Bernard's Houston Knox by one stroke.
Lockwood struggled on the front nine, shooting three over par. He was able to work his way back to par with a three-under back nine.
"He kind of balanced it out and came back strong to finish," Rice said. "That is one of the lowest scores that a Del Norte kid has shot here in a long time, probably in the last 10 years since James Haban."
The Warriors also had a stronger than normal effort from the Lockwood's supporting cast, which put Del Norte over the top.
Zach Horner and Steven Maready both shot an 85, and Colin Wakefield chipped in a score of 89.
"That is great for the kids," Rice said. "Having three rounds in the 80s is pretty good for us. That was pretty cool."
Maready, who has spent all spring playing baseball, was able to fill an open spot in the golf team's line-up, due to spring break and no baseball scheduled for Monday.
"It is too bad we didn't have him all season," Rice said. "We might be able to be up there towards first."
The Warriors rounded out their team score with a 98 from Paul Martinez and a 101 from Tristan Holmes.
The Humboldt-Del Norte regular season will come to a close on Thursday, April 24, at the Eureka Muni Golf Course. Lockwood looks to be a virtual lock to win his second straight individual league title.
After the meet at Del Norte Golf Course, Lockwood holds a 25- and 26-stroke lead over the Eureka duo of Logan Olsen and Aaron Russell.
