The Del Norte track and field teams made a two-day trek to Shasta Lake on Saturday for the John Frank Invitational, one of the biggest meets the Warriors will run at this season.

The invitational drew 40 teams and was split up into varsity and junior varsity divisions.

The Del Norte boys varsity, comprised strictly of juniors and seniors, placed seventhoverall with 21 points. The girls varsity took eighth place with 17 team points.

The Warriors junior varsity teams did even better, with the boys taking first place with 66 points and the girls finishing second with 67.

"The reason we go to meets like this is it allows the kids to go up against elite competition, its exposes them to warm weather like we are likely to see at the qualifying meet, and it boosts their confidence if they end up doing well, which our kids did," said head coach Samuel Escobar.

Del Norte recorded 40 personal records in Shasta Lake in 13 different events.

The Warriors long jumpers saw the biggest improvement with Chad Bell, Samuel Aragones, Victor De los Santos, Glenn Duncan, Kayla Costello, Shauna Naffah, Jordan Babich and Sandra de Leon Mendoza all earning PRs.

De los Santos had a particularly eye-catching day for the boys. As a sophomore, De los Santos was running with the junior varsity. In addition to winning the JV long jump with a jump of 18'10" and the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 44.48, De los Santos also helped the JV 4x100 meter relay to a second place finish.

"That just goes to show, when matched against similar competition, he did great."

Sophomore Rachel Rowe enjoyed similar success with the girls JV. Rowe won the 400 meter with a time of 1:04.6 and the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.02. She also helped the 4x100 relay team to a third place finish.

"She started feeling sick due to the heat, so we told her to cool off and rest," Escobar said. "She was able to come back and run the 200 later and won it."

The Del Norte boys also had a strong 4x100 meter varsity race, taking third place in a season-best time of 45.57 seconds.

"I was probably the most impressed by the boys varsity 4x100 team of Anthony Jackson, Jackson Evans, David Sathe and Chad Bell," Escobar said. "Even though they came in third, they ran a great race. Their handoffs were excellent and Chad was catching up to the second place kid at the end."

Del Norte ran again on Wednesday at McKinleyville in the third Humboldt-Del Norte league meet of the season. See Saturday's Triplicate for results.
