Del Norte takes third as a team
Del Norte sophomore phenom Kobie Lockwood has won his second individual Humboldt-Del Norte League title.
Although he has had the race all but locked up for over a month, after the final meet of the regular season at Eureka Muni Golf Course it became official.
Once again, Lockwood's name was at the top of the leader board, but this time he had some company. Eureka's Aaron Russell tied Lockwood's score of 67 (4 under par) for first place at the meet.
It was the first time all season that Lockwood's score had been matched, but his undefeated streak remained intact.
Del Norte only had three golfers attend the meet in Eureka. Trystan Holmes shot 92 and Zach Horner shot 91.
The Warriors top golfer finished the season with a combined score of 490 - six strokes under par.
"That is a pretty good score," said Del Norte head coach Kirk Burrows. "It's the best that I have seen in a while since I have seen anybody finish the year under par."
Russell finished the year second individually with a score of 526. He and teammate Logan Olsen, who finished third individually, vaulted Eureka to the HDN team championship. Del Norte finished third behind the Loggers and McKinleyville. The Warriors edged out Arcata by just five strokes.
Lockwood will move on to compete in the North Coast Section Division 1 qualifier at the Boundary Oak Golf Course in Walnut Creek on May 5.
The rest of the team is finished for the season.
"It was a good year," Burrows said. "Everybody improved and it was a good time. We only had six players all year though, so we have to get our numbers a little bigger. But we have three kids that will be coming back next year. That is a good nucleus. Hopefully they will get out and play a little more and we can get our scores down for next year."
