Del Norte sophomore golfer Kobie Lockwood extended his season at least another week with a second place finish at the 2014 North Coast Section Division 2 Championship on Monday at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville.

Lockwood, who stormed through Humboldt-Del Norte league play to capture his second HDN individual championship in a row, shot a 71-par, 4 strokes behind winner Daniel Connolly of Stuart Hall. He was six strokes ahead of the eighth- and ninth-place finishers.

"He was definitely one of the top two golfers there," said Del Norte head coach Kirk Burrows. "He had things going really well early in the round. He got to five under par, but then he had a little trouble putting and finished even."

With his second-place finish, Lockwood qualifies for the North Coast Section Tournament of Champions, which will be held in Petaluma at the Rooster Run Golf Course on May 12. Last year, Lockwood shot a 75 at the Division 2 Championship to tie for eighth place. He missed out on advancing to the tournament of champions on tiebreakers.

"We are extremely excited that he qualified and extremely excited that he got second," Burrows said. "He knows that he had a chance to win it, but the biggest thing is just getting out of this thing and getting to play again next week."

Corey Mederios of McKinleyville and Alex Zhu of St. Bernard Catholic were both in attendance as well. Mederios took advantage of playing at his home course, shooting a 77 for eighth place and a spot in the tournament of champions.
