The Del Norte sixth grade AAU boys basketball team made a run all the way to the championship, earning a runner-up trophy in a 20-team bracket at the Kyle Singler Tournament in Medford over the weekend.

"The kids played very hard," said head coach Frank Dowd. "I couldn't have asked for any more effort. We played some tough teams, some tough competition. None of our games were easy, but in the end we ran into a team that had a couple tall kids that we couldn't play with. We just came up a little bit short."

The Warriors had a difficult path to reach the championship game, just edging past all three teams that they beat.

"All three wins were a fight to the end of the game," Dowd said. "In two of the games we came back when we were down by more than eight points at halftime."

The Warriors topped Eastside Cougar from Redding 37-24 in the first round, MBA Laker from Medford 50-42 in the quarterfinals and Humboldt Elite 42-28 in the Semifinals. Del Norte lost in the finals to the Portland All-Stars.

The eighth grade and junior varsity boys teams were also at the tournament. The eighth-graders lost both of their games. The JV won its first game and lost its next two.

The Warriors have one more tournament left this year. They will travel to Reno, Nev., for the biggest AAU tournament in the world with over 1,000 teams, ranging in age from fourth to 12th grade. The sixth grade Warriors won the tournament last season as fifth graders.
