Shortstop Shelby Pendley, Utah Valley assistant to run camp for Del Norte softball players in July
Crescent City will welcome college softball royalty to Del Norte High School this July as Oklahoma's two-time All-American shortstop Shelby Pendley and one of her offseason training coaches, Ryan Wigley, the lead assistant at Utah Valley, provide instruction to up-and-coming players at the Del Norte Softball Camp.
"Ryan has done nearly 100 camps across the U.S. and is a very talented coach," said Ryan's father, Bill Wigley, the new owner of Ming Tree Real Estate. "He and Shelby will provide the best camp that Del Norte has ever seen.It is unusual to have someone of her stature visit Del Norte, I know - I grew up here."
Bill Wigley said he wanted to organize a top-tier camp for Del Norte as a way to "give back to the community." Bill Wigley recently moved back to Del Norte after most recently living here in 1995 for one year when Ryan was 11 years old.
The camp, which Bill Wigley said would generally cost between $250andndash;$300 per player, is open to girls 8andndash;18 years old for $50 per player.
The camp will run from July 19andndash;20 and run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"(Players) will improve their softball skills in everything from hitting to fielding," Wigley said.
The camp will also offer a special meeting for parents and parent coaches in which Ryan Wigley and Pendley will sit down and discuss everything from college recruiting, training, playing at the college level, and they will answer any other questions. The cost of the special meeting is $25 per couple or $15 with a camper already registered.
The camp will accept 50 total players. Bill Wigley said roughly 20 players had already signed up as of Monday. Players must register and pay in advance to participate.
Interested players can register at Ming Tree Real Estate at 1000 Northcrest Dr. Bill Wigley can be reached at 707-634-4944 or by email email@example.com .
Net proceeds from the event will be donated to Del Norte Little League.
Meet the coaches
While living in Del Norte for one year in the 1990s, Ryan Wigley played in the Del Norte Rec League and in the Brookings Little League. Wigley went on to play college baseball at Cal Baptists, where he holds school records for games played, walks, stolen bases, assists, on-base percentage and sacrifice hits.
After college, Ryan Wigley started coaching softball, serving as an assistant coach at Taft Junior College, California Luthern University and Colorado Mesa before taking the job at Utah Valley. In 2014, he helped the Wolverines to a Western Athletic Conference Tournament title and the school's first-ever trip to NCAA Regionals, where they ran into Oregon in the first round.
Wigley has been helping Pendley in the offseason for the last couple years and they have worked at numerous camps together.
Pendley was a first-team All American as a junior this season after leading the Big 12 in batting average, hits, runs, home runs, doubles, RBI, total bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. In 2013, Pendley was a second team All-American and the Big 12 Player of the year as the Sooners won the Women's College World Series.
