Warrior Memories: Warrior fans will never forget the late Drew Roberts

Submitted

As an old Del Norte High School and Humboldt State player and fan, I was really sorry to hear of the passing of Warrior and Lumberjack legend Drew Roberts.

Those fans who followed the Warriors in the late '50s will always look at Drew as one of the best all-around athletes to wear the blue and gold of the Warriors. While Drew is best remembered for his feats on the football field, where his pass catching gave Warriors fans a lot of thrills and earned him all-league honors, he was also an all-league performer on the basketball court and on the baseball field.

In talking to Wally Maciel (Hall of Famer coach) who was Drew's baseball coach, he said, "Drew could run, throw and hit the ball a mile."

He had the kind of power that baseball players dream about. At the end of Drew's senior football season, he was selected to the All-North State team as an end. His good friend and quarterback who threw passes to Drew, Danny Aouse, also received Teen Magazine All-American honors. As a senior, Drew also was elected student body president and voted the most athletic senior.

After graduation, Drew went on to Humboldt State, where he continued his outstanding football career.

Many of Drew's accomplishments still have places in the Lumberjack record books. His 13 touchdown receptions in the 1960 season still rank second all time. Also his single season receptions is fourth in the record books. His career touchdown receptions are also ranked second. The 62 pass receptions in the 1960 season still hold the eighth place all time.

I was still a student at Humboldt doing graduate work during Drew's career there, so I got to watch him perform, and he was good. I consider it a privilege to call his wife Judy and children my friends.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High sports as a former player, coach, athletic directer and a lifelong fan.
