King Salmon fishing slow on ocean near Crescent City; bottom fishing remains reliable

Adam Spencer, The Triplicate

Every year, Englund Marine Supply Co. in Crescent City Harbor bestows a rod-and-reel setup to the two anglers who catch the largest lingcod and the largest salmon of the season.

Just two days after the largest lingcod of the season was weighed in at Englund Marine, a 36andfrac12;-pound ling was brought in by Kelley Thurmond, of Crescent City, on July 13.

The largest salmon caught so far weighed in at 30andfrac12; pounds gilled and gutted and was caught by Ted Lowe.

Crescent City ocean fishing

Ocean salmon fishing out of Crescent City has been pretty slow going, according to Keith Richcreek of Pacific West Coast Ocean Fishing Guide Service. There are lots of silver salmon, which cannot be retained, out there but hardly any king salmon to be seen.

Bottom fishing for rockfish and lingcod is almost always consistently good out of Crescent City and this week was no exception.

Capt. Craig Strickhouser of Tally Ho II Sportfishing took some clients out on Wednesday despite the rainy conditions and got rockfish limits for every one on board in less than two hours, as well as half-limits for lingcod.

Lower Klamath River

There have been a few reports of salmon being caught already at the mouth of the Klamath River, but it is still pretty early for the widely celebrated run of Klamath River fall chinook.

Eureka Ocean fishing

Ocean salmon fishing was pretty slow last week out of Eureka but Reel Steel Sportfishing reports that they were back on the bite this week, finding limits of salmon for clients with beautiful, flat-ocean conditions.
