Del Norte rolls to three-set victory over Gold Beach
The Del Norte volleyball team took care of business once again on Thursday in Thunen Gymnasium with a three-set sweep of Gold Beach (25-13, 25-11, 25-6) to improve to 7-2 overall this season with both losses coming at the hands of Cascade Christian at the Yreka Tournament over the weekend.
"It has been hard to find good competition around here to play in the preseason," said head coach Debbie Lorenzi. "I was happy that the girls played with spirit though. They kept their spirit up, their energy level up, they had a lot of communication, and I thought they looked pretty good."
The Warriors' play was an encouraging sign for Lorenzi, after she thought the team played a little tight in its first home game of the season on Tuesday against Brookings.
The Warriors had a strong day serving the ball, recording a total of 15 aces led by five aces by senior Regin Loftin. Sophomores Claire Smith and Antonia Alcala both chipped in three aces apiece and fellow sophomore Payten Healy added two more aces.
Healy also led the team with 28 assists.
Loftin was the team leader with 11 kills against Gold Beach followed by junior Tayler Melton's seven kills. Smith chipped in six kills for Del Norte.
Loftin and Healy were both named to the all-tournament team last weekend in Yreka.
The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Grants Pass for Hidden Valley's tournament. Lorenzi said Hidden Valley will be one of the best teams the Warriors have faced yet, when they open up pool play on Saturday. Brookings-Harbor and Klamath Union are the other two teams in Del Norte's pool.
If the Warriors can place in the top two in pool play in the morning they will advance to the championship bracket in the afternoon, where Lorenzi expects to see a few more difficult opponents.
The Warriors game against Brookings-Harbor, originally scheduled for Sept. 14 in Crescent City, was cancelled due to a scheduling conflict, so the Warriors will have all of next week off before traveling to Portland on Sept. 18-19 for the Anderson Tournament.
