Arts for Veterans
The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness announces a new workshop as a part of its Arts for Veterans program. From 1 p.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays beginning this weekend through March 3 at the Del Norte Senior Center at 1765 Northcrest Dr., teaching artist Barbara Genovese will hold a Creative Writing Circle for veterans and their families. Registration is required.
A new course of guitar classes taught by Dale Morgan will take place in the Fireside Room at VFW Hall at 810 H St., and will run from Jan. 23 through March 27. Intermediate classes are from 5:15 p.m.-6:15 p.m. and beginning classes are from 6:15 p.m.-7:15 p.m.

Manley Art Center Gallery
Join the Pelican Bay Arts Association 3 p.m.-5p.m. on Sunday at the Manley Art Center Gallery at 433 Oak St., in Brookings to celebrate new work by Brian Childers. Enjoy the afternoon with food and drink and a discussion on the finer points of turning wood. For more information, call 541-469-1807.
Friends of Music
Brookings Harbor Friends of Music continues their 33rd season on Sunday with Zivian Tomkins Duo, a returning favorite now performing with violinist Axel Strauss. Their upcoming lineup includes: Nordic Voices, an a cappella group from Scandinavia, on Feb. 11; The Minetti Quartet, a string ensemble from Austria, on Feb. 25; and the Rastrelli Cello Quartet, an outfit dedicated to performing between the genres, on April 15.
The season concludes on May 20 with Friends of Music’s annual Scholarship concert, free to all, teaming up with Alexander Tutunov, a professor of piano at Southern Oregon University, to highlight young artists selected as scholarship winners. All concerts take place at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 102 Park Ave., Brookings. Season tickets for all 7 performances are $100 and individual concert tickets are $20. DNACA’s 26th Annual Juried Multimedia Show reception
The public is invited to join the Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness in honoring the participating artists of its 26th annual Juried Multimedia Show. The reception takes place 5 p.m.-6 p.m. Jan. 18 in the courthouse at 450 H St., with hors d’oeuvres and networking with local artists and others in our arts community. Art in Public Places
The Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness’ Art in Public Places exhibit is the 26th Annual Juried Multimedia Show. It is available for viewing in the Del
Norte County Courthouse at 450 H St., Crescent City, through Jan. 18. The courthouse is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays except for state holidays. For more information, call DNACA at 707-464-1336.
Del Norte High School Dance
The students of Del Norte High School’s dance classes present “Legends Never Die,” a winter dance concert, at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 19-20 in Crescent Elk Auditorium at 994 G St., Crescent City. Tickets for general admission are $8 pre-sale or $10 at the door, students and senior citizens are $5, children 6-12 are $3, and children 5 and under are free. Tickets are available at Del Norte Office Supply at 240 I St. and at the door.
Crescent Harbor Gallery
Coast Redwoods Art Association’s Crescent Harbor Gallery January Artist of the Month is John Wilkinson. A papier mache program, for both kids and adults, is starting at 1 p.m. on Saturdays; bring a round plastic container.
A Valentine Card workshop will be hosted by Cheryl Williams 1 p.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday for a registration fee of $15. Every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. is Paint and Play day for children. Every Sunday from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. are paint-ins, offering a space and good company for artists and crafters. California Redwoods Art Association
California Redwoods Art Association’s 2nd St Gallery’s January Artist of the Month is “Smokey” Bill Harper, showcasing his mixed media photography. The Wild Rivers Community Foundation at 990 Front St., has also hung paintings by Lee Beising and photography by Betty Depee and will be available for viewing through Feb. 1. Become a member of the gallery and spend Saturday afternoons painting and networking from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Art classes for children take place on Saturday mornings. Beginning oil painting
Local artist Arlene Krogstad will teach a three-part beginning oil painting workshop, in a paint-along format with redwoods, from 9 a.m-noon on Feb. 9, 16, and 23 at Crescent Harbor Gallery at 140 Marine Way. The cost to participate in all three is $65 and registration is required. Most supplies will be furnished, but participants are asked to bring two small jars with lids. South Coast Writers Conference
The 23rd Annual South Coast Writers Conference will take place at Southwestern Oregon Community College at 96082 Lone Ranch Rd., Brookings. Writing-intensive workshops will be offered from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Feb. 16 followed by a free-to-the-public authors’ reading from 7 p.m.-9p.m. Four 90-minute workshops will be available for advance registration all day Feb. 17 followed by a free-of-charge writers’ critique circle from 7 p.m.-9p.m. Registration fees are $65 for Saturday only through Jan. 31 and will then increase to $75, $125 for both Friday and Saturday through Jan. 31 and will then increase to $135, and $60 for Friday only if space is available after Jan. 31.
