A string of intentional restroom fires kept Crescent City Fire and Police on their toes Friday morning but a suspect has not been arrested.

In the space of a half hour, police and fire personnel responded to three incidents. The men’s restrooms off Stamps Way, in the parking lot at the Battery Point Lighthouse and near the Marine Mammal Center.

According to the dispatch log, the fires were reported at 10:21 a.m., 10:38 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., respectively.

At the scene of the third incident, Fire Chief Steve Wakefield said someone had packed toilet paper around the base of the toilets and ignited it.

“Since the seats are vinyl or plastic, they caught on fire and melted,” he said.

Wakefield said the toilet off Stamps Way melted almost entirely.

Damage was limited to the toilets and did not spread to the rest of the buildings. The restrooms were locked until repairs can be made.

A witness at the scene of the second fire described a male subject in a green raincoat, saying smoke came from the restroom shortly after he left it.

Police were given the same description, and searched the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.
