The Del Norte track and field team got its season started this week at the Humboldt Relays and Humboldt State University on Wednesday, and the Warriors came home with three first place finishes in the seven team meet made up entirely of Humboldt-Del Norte League schools.

All three of the Warriors wins came in the field events. Tim Thompson threw the discus 113 feet to win the boys competition, while Carolin Cochran won the girls shot put with a throw of 28 feet. Ethan Price took first place in the high jump by clearing 5’6”.

“I thought it went well,” said head coach Jason Zeigler. “We competed hard. We had a limited amount of events for each kid, because we knew it was going to be cold. It was just about getting them out there and getting their feet wet. We have a lot of first-year high school track athletes this year.”

Del Norte traditionally opens its season at the Brookings Icebreaker each year, but Zeigler said this season the Warriors were force to find a replacement due to the Icebreaker conflicting with the first HDN League meet of the year.

Zeigler said the Humboldt Relays were a nice way to kick off the season.

“It was interesting,” Zeigler said. “It was a nice experience for the kids to be on a college track. It was good for the kids. The kids had fun even though it rained. They were enjoying and celebrating each other’s accomplishments.”

With events such as the 4x800 meter relay, the distance medley, and the super sprint medley that are not offered in high school competition in California, the Humboldt Relays were mainly just a chance for the Warriors to get back into the flow of the track and field season.

“We had a lot of kids doing different running events and just getting their feet wet in a track meet,” Zeigler said. “Now we know where our training needs to go to, and some of the kids figured out how much harder they need to work.”

The Del Norte track and field teams are scheduled to be back in action for the Panther Relays in McKinleyville on March 17, starting at 3 p.m. The Warriors will kick off league competition on March 21 in either Arcata or McKinleyville.
