A total of 10 middle school track and field teams convened in Creccent City on Tuesday for the second of three scheduled meets at Del Norte High School this year, including teams from Crescent Elk, Redwood, and Smith River.

The Redwood girls varsity (8th graders) came away with a first place finish in the team standings with 64 total points, just two points ahead of second place Azalea. The Azalea boys varsity team took first place in the boys standings, beating out second place Crescent Elk.

Although there were no new county records set on Tuesday, a few of Redwood’s female sprinters set new county records in the first home meet of the year. The Red Raiders girls varsity 4x100 meter relay team of Tianna Thompson, Emilia Thompson, Theresa Martinez and Giannna Taylor set a new county record in the event with a time of 54.8 seconds. That beat the 1993 Crescent Elk team’s time of 55.34.

In the same meet Taylor improved on the 7th grade 200 meter record that she captured last year with a time of 26.89. Tianna Thompson broke a 38-year-old record in the eighth grade 200 meter dash with a time of 26.85. The previous 8th grade record of 27.5 was set by Jennifer Garrison in 1980.

The last track meet of the season is scheduled for Wednesday, back at Del Norte High School. Field events are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by running events at 4 p.m.
