Girls tennis team undefeated in HDNC

The Del Norte High girls tennis team continued its torrid pace in Humboldt-Del Norte Conference play on Tuesday, defeating Eureka 8-1 at home. The win brings the squad to 4-0 for the year in HDNC play.

On Saturday, the team travels to top HDNC power Arcata.

In the No. 1 seed match up, Emma Wilson handled Crystal Parker 6-4, 6-4.

No. 2 seed Rebecca Cink defeated Jenna Madsen 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, while Lauren Godla lost to Vivi Smith 6-7, (5-7), 4-6. No 4. Ashleigh Speaker defeated Elsie Adams 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Jennifer Gustafson won against Kristen Callahan 6-1, 6-0. Rachel Cink won against Tori Edwards 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

In doubles action, Wilson and Rebecca Cink defeated Parker and Madsen 8-1. Gustafson and Speaker defeated Smith and Adams 8-3, and Rachel Cink and Kelsy Hintz defeated Callahan and Edwards 8-2.

Head coach Jane Rumiano said the girls were challenged by a Eureka team "that knew how to hit the ball well and play good tennis."

Overall, Rumiano said she was pleased with how they played.

"The girlsstepped up their games to meet the challenge, learned more about themselves and how to play tennis in the process," she said.
