Obituaries: Joseph Peter Mendez(1926-2007)

Joseph Peter "Joe" Mendez, a lifelong resident of Del Norte County, died Sept. 2, 2007 at the age of 81.

He was born March 19, 1926 in Crescent City.

Prior to his retirement, he owned and operated the 76 Union Gas Station in Crescent City during the 1950s and 60s. He also worked at Simonson Lumber Company, was a Chevrolet auto salesman for the local dealerships and most recently was a real estate agent for Del Norte Realty for more than 28 years.

He was an active member of the Crescent Lodge 45 F & AM, Aahmes Temple of Livermore, and the Oakland Scottish Rite Bodies. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge having served as past Master, received the Hiram Award and was proud to have sponsored children at the Shriners Children's Hospital.

He was also a member of the 20-30 Club, Elks Lodge, Odd Fellows Lodge, Rotary Club, Board of Realtors and served as a director on the Del Norte County Fair Board. He was an instrumental member of the committee for the creation of the Mike Whalen Football Field at Del Norte High School, including the lighting.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Betty Mendez of Crescent City; his sons and their wives: Frank (Susie) Mendez of Crescent City and Larry (Doris) Mendez of McKinleyville; his daughter and her husband, Vicki (Walter) Murray of Brookings; his grandchildren, Scott Mendez, Gregory Wheelon, Chad Mendez, Neely Wheelon, Dale Mendez, Brennan Mendez, Spencer Mendez, Becky Simpson, Victoria Sargent, Donald Campbell, John Campbell, Micky Jones, Travis Campbell, Troy Campbell, and Haley Campbell.

He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Mercedes Mendez; his brother, Jim Mendez; and his stepsons Steve and Harley Campbell.

Funeral services for Joe Mendez are scheduled for Saturday Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. at Crescent City Masonic Lodge, 9th and B Streets, with interment at St. Joseph Cemetery following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd. Sacramento, CA 95817.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel.
