With the coaches right on the field watching their every move, members of the Del Norte High football team came out ready to show what they could do at the annual intrasquad Blue-Gold Scrimmage on Friday.

It was the first time this season the team was in full uniform, as a number of plays were run in front of a crowd of Warrior supporters at Mike Whalen Field. The Warriors began two-a-day practices on Monday.

The coaching staff kept a close eye on the proceedings, shouting words of encouragement when a good play was made and voicing displeasure when something did not go as well.

"That's the way to get your hands up." "Good throw. Good read to 11." "That's better. You gave them no ground," were some of the comments the coaches made during the scrimmage.

Head coach Lewis Nova said he was quite pleased with how the scrimmage went and said he felt his squad looked sharper than they did this time last year.

"It's good to see them out there in pads in a live situation," he said.

He was also pleased with the performance of some of the junior varsity players who are trying out for the varsity squad. He said he and his coaching staff will meet this weekend to decide which players will be moved up to varsity.

Nova commended many of the JV players for stepping up, playing well, and not being discouraged, even when they made a mistake.

Del Norte begins the season on Sept. 7 at Brookings. The team's first home game is on Sept. 14 against Hidden Valley, Ore.

On Friday , the Warriors travel to Fortuna for the annual Big 5 football Jamboree. The event gives the squad a chance to run plays on both offense and defense against each team from the league.

The Warriors have high expectations for this year, after coming off their most successful football season in school history. Del Norte went undefeated in Big 5 play and won two North Coast Section playoff games.

On Tuesday, the JV and freshman teams will take part in an intrasquad game at 5:30 p.m. at Mike Whalen field.
