Marvin James Vanderzanden, 69, of Smith River, died Aug. 16, 2007 at his home following a long illness.

He was born to James and Teresa Marie Meeuwsen in Tillamook, Ore., Feb. 8, 1938, and was raised and educated in Roy, Ore. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in Oregon.

He married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Kae Perry, Dec. 9, 1957, in Vancouver, Wash.

Marvin worked on the family farm in Hillsboro until moving his family to Smith River in 1968. He then started a 23-year career as farm foreman at Reservation Ranch.

In 1991, he leased The Bank Tavern in Smith River briefly until poor health forced his retirement.

He was a past member of the board of directors of the Smith River Fire Dept.

He was friendly and easy to talk to, and enjoyed meeting friends and neighbors at The Bank Tavern on a daily basis.

He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing and camping; but most of all, being with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Pat, of Smith River; three daughters, Connie Brixey and partner John Vance of St. Helens, Ore.; Debbie Brixey of Crescent City; and Cathy Dutton (Jerry) of Smith River; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and John Barr of Springfield, Ore.; JeanAnn and Ron Smith of Kaiser, Ore.; and Cheryl and Bill Matson; grandchildren, Jon, Jessica, Benjamin and Joe Brixey; Jennifer Legler; and Timber and Chris Vanderzanden; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at the Niche Wall at Smith River Cemetery at 4 p.m., Tuesday.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Care, Crescent City.
