Letters: Cleaning of park following Fourth festivities truly heroic

July 09, 2007 11:00 pm

I would like to thank the city and my fellow citizens for a fireworks display, at the harbor this year, that left me stunned ("Fourth of July Festivities," July 5). I have never seen anything like it, and can't wait to do it again.

All I can say is "Wow!"

On Thursday afternoon, I encountered the only thing that could challenge that awe I felt Wednesday night. I often park at Beachfront Park in the mornings and always try to do a little bit of trash picking, sort of just to help out. When I cruised the park that afternoon around 3:45 p.m., I expected the aftermath of the battle zone I saw the previous evening.

But what to my wondering eyes should appear? There wasn't so much as a napkin blowing past. If anything, it was cleaner than normal. ThenI went through the turn outs around the harbor. Same result. I was almost dizzy from it.

I stopped by the harbor office just after they had closed, and talked with the maintenance folks that were leaving after an obviously long day, to say, with a tear in my eye, "God bless all of you, it must have taken nerves of steel to walk into the mess that must surely have been there, and to be able to leave in one short shift with those results ... I don't know how to say thank you and well done enough."

I feel truly blessed to be part of this community.

Every person involved needs to be named and thanked publicly. That was truly a heroic effort.

Thank you so very much.
