Letters: Money raised by Soroptimists stays in chapter's community

Regarding "LRT developing plans for theater" (June 20), the article ends with an acknowledgement of a $5,000 donation made to Lighthouse Repertory Theatre from Soroptimist, "an Oakland based organization for professional and executive women." I would like to clarify, that while, Soroptimist International of the Americas was formed in 1921 in Oakland, California, the donation made to LRT was made by our local chapter, Soroptimist International of Crescent City.

As a relative new member of this organization, I felt it necessary to acknowledge the contribution made by this dedicated group of women that give tirelessly of themselves to this community. These are professional women whose common goal is to improve the lives of women and children through volunteering their time, talent, energy and resources through Soroptimist International. Our member roster includes women who have been involved with community service through Soroptimist for over 30 years giving thousands of dollars toward local scholarships, continuing education for women, Bar-o-Boys Ranch, Rape Crisis, Harrington House and numerous other local causes.

We believe the LRT plan to provide a Community Arts Center will benefit all aspects of our community and wanted to provide our full support to this endeavor with a substantial donation. Soroptimist International of Crescent City would like to challenge other local service groups to meet or beat our donation so that this community will have the benefits of a beautiful Community Playhouse and Arts Center.

In conclusion, I would like to take this opportunity to again acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the women of our local Soroptimist. These are women who work behind the scenes without public accolades and have for decades. So, when you see us this Fourth of July selling cow chip bingo deeds, please know that each of those dollars stay here in Del Norte County for local scholarships and donations as we work to improve the lives of women and children in our community and network with other Soroptimist to impact lives globally.
