Our View: Give promos our stampof approval

Del Norte County today received 35 million free sheets of advertisement thanks to the U.S. Postal Service. A set of first-class stamps featuring Pacific Coast lighthouses – including our own St. George Reef Lighthouse – go on sale.

The stamps should be zipping across the nation on letters and bills for at least the next year. Far more than 35 million pairs of eyes will get a look at our lighthouse.

It's an honor to have our lighthouse to be among the five selected to represent the Pacific Coast. Cer-tainly other lighthouses have intriguing stories of their own to tell.

So the selection ought to tell us something in Del Norte: We've got something special here, something that raises our lighthouse above all the others in California.

A sizeable number of Americans who see the St. George Reef stamp during the next few months will know that. And many of them will be inspired to travel to the Pacific Northwest to see the Del Norte County, Oregon and Washington lighthouses featured in the series – not to mention all of the other interesting ones that were passed over (like our own Battery Point Lighthouse or those in neighboring Curry County).

There's just one problem: The stamps only list the name of the lighthouse and the state where it's located. That makes sense as there's only so much room on a thumbnail for legible lettering.

That means locally we're going to need to do what we can to ensure that anyone going online or elsewhere connects St. George Reef Lighthouse to Del Norte County and all of our other many great attractions, such as the Redwoods and ocean beaches. It seems to us that continued financial support for our Visitors Bureau's effort to promote the area is the logical way to achieve this.

The Postal Service has given us an incredible opportunity. It's now our turn to take advantage of it.
