Del Norte County may get a portion of U.S. Hwy. 101 designated in honor of a California Highway Patrol officer.

The Senate Transportation Committee passed a bill Tuesday by Assemblywoman Patty Berg, D-Eureka, that would honor slain Del Norte County officer Ernest R. Felio.

The bill titled ACR 31 would designate a portion of Hwy. 101 between the E.M. Fine Memorial Bridge and the Oregon State line as the Ernest R. Felio Memorial Highway.

Felio served in the Korean War. As a veteran, he joined the patrol in 1962. California awarded Felio the Medal of Valor for saving a man who was almost electrocuted during a traffic collision. Felio was shot and killed during the course of a routine traffic stop.

"Felio's bravery will always be remembered through this memorial," said Assemblywoman Berg. "He lived an exemplary life worthy of this honor."

ACR 31 will be considered by the Senate Appropriations Committee.
