Older residents who are interested in reaching their artistic potential can apply for grants from Brookings Harbor Festival of the Arts enabling them to do so.

The grants of up to $1,000 can fund classes, seminars and supplies, for example, and are not pegged to financial needs. They are to help budding older artists develop their skills rather than to fund the production of a product.

All creative artistic fields are eligible. The fields include, but are not limited to, fine art, photography, woodwork, sculpting, pottery, writing, poetry, metal work and music.

Eligibility includes those aged 50 and older who live in Crescent City and the portion of Del Norte County stretching north to the Oregon state line.

Applicants must demonstrate talent in a relatively new (to them) artistic field and document how the grant will help develop their newly realized talent.

Grant recipients are selected by an independent, anonymous review committee that includes experts in various artistic fields.

Deadline is July 1, and grants will be awarded during opening ceremonies of the 2007 Festival of the Arts Aug. 18.
