With the Big 5 league title sewed up on Saturday, the Del Norte High girls softball team took to the field against McKinleyville at home on Wednesday ready to go out and have fun.

Have fun they did, as the Warriors defeated the Panthers 7-2 to improve to a top-notch 20-3 overall and 10-2 in Big 5 play.

Head coach Jackie Heuberger had all her seniors start the game and said she was pleased with how the seniors, even those that normally don't see much playing time, went out and performed well.

"The girls hit the ball well," she said, including scoring five runs in the second inning. She added she was pleased the team kept fielding errors down to a minimuim, committing only two errors.

McKinnze Holden pitched a terrific game, striking out 13 Panther batters.

Before starting play in the North Coast section playoffs next week, the Warriors will have one more game at home against Gold Beach, Ore. at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Heuberger said the game was just added to give both teams a competitive warm up before the playoffs. Originally set to play earlier this year, the contest was canceled. Del Norte will find out on Sunday who they will face in the playoffs, most likely a home game. The game will be played on Tuesday or Wednesday. Gabby Navarro went 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI. Holden also went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and an RBI. Alyssa Luna went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Michelle Stacey went 2-for-2 with two doubles and one RBI.
