A pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle Wednesday is the apparent cause of the accident after he grabbed the wheel from the driver.

Twenty-year-old Christopher F. Jett of Crescent City was stopped in his 1990 Nissan Maxima at the intersection of Cooper Avenue and El Dorado Street, when Rickey L. Toney, 36, charged Jett's vehicle, according to a California Highway Patrol press release,

Toney grabbed onto Jett's Maxima and began screaming obscenities at Jett. Toney then reached through the open window and grabbed Jett and the steering wheel.

At that point, Jett began to drive and, according to the highway patrol's report, lost control of the vehicle due to Toney's interference. Jett slammed Toney into a parked vehicle, causing major injuries.

Jett fled the scene.

Toney suffered a broken back and numerous lacerations and abrasions from the collision with the parked car. Jett was arrested on felony hit-and-run charges.

Highway patrol is investigating the matter and do not know why Toney approached Jett's vehicle, or what he was yelling at him.
