Xiao Jin Yuan, a California developer who wants to build a hotel at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Oregon, pulled out of a meeting about the project Tuesday.

Yuan, owner of Crescent City's Hampton Inn & Suites, said he was pulling out because the project had become a political "punch bag."

He also expressed uncertainty about submitting a formal proposal if the county opts to go through a formal bid process that would be open to other companies.

He has worked on the project with Roseburg City Commissioner Marilyn Kittelman and her political adviser during the past year.

His project would have resulted in an 84-room hotel worth $10 million.
