For more than 20 years, runners and walking enthusiasts alike have had an opportunity to participate in a scenic run or walk through the redwoods.

Each year, hundreds of participants don their running shoes to partake in the Redwood Wild River Run, which is set for 11 a.m March 24.

The event begins and ends at the covered bridge at Douglas Park in the Hiouchi area.

Participants can either run or walk their way through a fairly strenuous 15 kilometer race, or a more relaxing 5 kilometer fun run/walk. The run route goes through scenic old growth redwood forest.

Race director Ralph Hirt said while most participants are mainly from the Crescent City and Brookings area, many more come from other parts of the region, such as Portland, Ore., and the Bay Area.

Hirt encourages previous participants and those who have not taken part before to sign up for this year's race.

"It's a great way to start on a exercise program," he said.

Hirt knows a thing or too about running himself.

He estimated he has participated in more than 60 marathons, as well as many ultra marathons, which are any race over 26 miles.

For him, being part of the run is a way to give back to a sport he has loved and been a part of for many years.

Hirt recommends participants to be ready for any number of weather scenarios on the day of the run.

In past years, that could be anything from sunny weather, drizzling showers, down pouring rain, to even snow and hail.

The early registration fee is $12 and needs to be postmarked no later than March 15. After that, the fee is $20. There will be several age divisions.

Participants range from children to those in their 80s, Hirt said.

To sign up for the race, send a check for the entry fee to: RWRR, 645 Meridan St, Crescent City, CA 95531.
