The Del Norte High boys tennis team lost its first match of the year to Arcata 9-0.

Head coach Kirk Olsen said he was pleased with how his team performed against the squad he believes is the best in the area and said the score did not show how his team played well for the majority of the matches.

"They are really strong this year," he said about the Tigers and said he believes the Warriors will have much better results against the other teams they face in the coming weeks.

"It was good to see how we stacked up against the best team," Olsen said.

Considering the Warriors have had limited practice time due to stady rains, he was happy with the way his players played.

In the first match, Casey Mansfield defeated Del Norte player Blake Polidore 6-0, 6-0.

In the second match, German exchange student Alex Kusmach of Arcata defeated David Standring 6-2, 6-0.

Charlie Hankin defeated Ben Tell 6-1, 6-0. Edward Hunter defeated Tyler Pitman 6-2, 6-1, while Chad Richins of Del Norte lost to Ben Miller 6-1, 6-1. In the final singles match, Warrior Joel Bruhns lost to Erik Martini 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles action, Mansfield and Kusmach defeated Polidore and Standring 8-2. Hankin and Hunter defeated Tell and Pitman 8-3, while Edward Buffet and Ray Hawkins defeated Richins and Bruhns 8-1.

The Warriors next play at home at 3:30 p.m. Thursday against Ferndale.
