The start of the season got off on the right foot for the Del Norte High track and field team this past weekend, as the squad had a strong showing at the Del La Salle track meet in Concord on Saturday.

Kelsy Hintz garnered first place in the girl's pole vault, jumping 11 feet.

Jessica Slayton finished first in the girl's high jump, with a jump of 5.2 feet, while Bryce Lund came in second in the boys high jump, with a jump of 6 feet. Other Warriors who fared well at the meet included Rebecca Cink, who finished fourth in the girl's discuss throw. Taylor Duncan earned a fifth place finish in the boys pole vault, while Lund finished fifth in the 100-meter dash, and Bailee McCulloch and Hintz finished in ninth and 10th out of 43 participants in the girl's 100 meter dash. The girl's squad finished fifth in the team 4x200 meter relay.

"I'm happy with the kids," head coach Scott Lindsay said. "We got the season off in the right way. It was a good performance by the kids."

He said the competition at the meet was top-notch and was pleased the eight team members who were invited on the trip were able to do well in a high quality track meet.

Considering practices outdoors have been made difficult by steady rains, Lindsay was pleasantly surprised with how the squad did.

For instance, Lund had only one day's worth of practice in the high jump, while Slayton had only two days.

Lindsay said Lund looked more comfortable than he did last year, and believes he will only improve as the year goes on.

He was also pleased with how focused and aggressive Slayton was in the high jump.

With Hintz, he was happy that she was still able to jump 11 feet, which is what she jumped last May.

"We picked up where we were last year," he said.

The team will next participates in a track meet on Mar. 28, when the Warriors host the Del Norte track meet.

Lindsay said he's pleased there will be more time to practice and prepare.
