March is almost here, which means spring sports at Del Norte High are about to kick into high gear.

The Warriors baseball team has begun a fundraiser to seek donations to help the squad to start the season on the right foot.

Money will go towards things such as maintenance of the baseball field, fees for upcoming tournaments, travel expenses and equipment.

David O'Brien, whose son plays on the varsity team, is helping to spearhead the effort.

He said it's important to have funds to give the baseball team what it needs to be successful, such as a well maintained ball field to call home.

Eventually, O'Brien said, he hopes to help start other fundraising events such as a clinic for little league players, a golf tournament and perhaps a dance.

This year signals the return of Pablo Lorenzi as baseball coach. Lorenzi previously coached the Warriors to league titles and the North Coast Section playoffs in 1997 and 1998.

The varsity baseball team starts its season on March 8 at a baseball tournament in Red Bluff.

The junior varsity squad plays at Fortuna on March 7.
