Let's fund new auditorium for high school productions

Hats off once again to the Del Norte High School's drama department for a wonderful production of "Guys and Dolls." They utilized the multi-purpose room with skill and imagination, giving first-rate performances.

My only lament was the venue: uncomfortable metal folding chairs on a flat floor, making it difficult to view the stage from most positions.

It brings to mind the performances of the outstanding music department, which are held in the gymnasium. They also utilize the facility as best they can, but it seems they are deserving of so much more. An auditorium for the performances of choral, band, drama and dance would enhance their efforts and showcase them as they deserve.

I never wanted or dreamed of becoming rich, but now I wish I were so that I could fund an auditorium for Del Norte High School. Any ideas out there about how this could be achieved?

Community support made temporary shelter possible

The involvement and support in this community to the Emergency Shelter on Jan. 12-15 in response to the record cold was just amazing. As communities all over the nation reacted to this emergency situation, Del Norte citizens, businesses and local agencies came together in a quick response to the weather services report of dangerous weather ahead.

I would like to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation of all of those involved in this effort: Del Norte Fairgrounds, Rural Human Services, Our Daily Bread, Maybe This, Glen's Bakery, Sutter Coast Hospital, Bi Coastal Media, Coast True Value Employees, Safeway Employees, Pizza King, The Daily Triplicate, Homeless Help Committee, Crescent City Police, Del Norte Sheriff's Department, American Red Cross, Alexander Dairy, and the many, many volunteers who donated their time, supplies and clothing to this very special community effort. Special thanks to those who utilized this service for their personal involvement and support in making it such a success.

From this event came many wonderful ideas and volunteers who stepped forward and wanted to help with future community related activities.

This is what makes Del Norte such a wonderful place to live and the reason I moved my family to this area four years ago.

With all of the recent focus on showing the nation all of the many reasons why they would want to visit our area, I believe that the compassion for each other that we share here is the best reason to come and visit.

This event proved that by all of us working together, we can address all of the issues of the community.
