A Crescent City man is the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Distinction and and is the 2006 "Re-publican of the Year."

Calvin Wayne, 67, was chosen by the National Republican Congressional Committee's Business Advisory Council for his support of the Republican Party, his business leadership and contributions to the local economy.

"These are two very, very, very major awards," Wayne said. "I'm very surprised to get them."

Each year the council gives the awards to selected members who contribute to the NRCC and to the council. Numbers vary, but each state has at least a couple winners each year.

Wayne, who says he has supported the Republican Party for a long time, is a retired cop and owner of Scotty's RV, an RV repair chain in Oregon and California.

Wayne says he still remains a member of many local groups and chapters, including the Shriners and the Elks Lodge, and gives money to many of them.
