Despite a valiant effort to make it a game, the Del Norte High boys basketball team fell to Brookings-Harbor (Ore.) 54-48 Tuesday evening.

After being down by 16 points at the half, Del Norte was able to get back into the game in the second half and got as close as two points, but could not get over the hump and gain the victory.

The Bruins (8-5) were able to jump to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on its home court.

Del Norte (9-6) could not get going the first few minutes, unable to score or stop the Bruins efficiently on defense.

By the end of the first quarter, Del Norte was looking at a 16-8 deficit.

In the second quarter, the Warriors were still having problems, unable to get a consistent offensive game going, with too many shots bouncing out of the basket.

The normally reliable defense was also off, with the Bruins able to get to the basket and move the ball around.

With about three minutes left in the half, Del Norte finally scored to cut the lead to 22-10.

By the end of the half, the Warriors could only muster four second quarter points and left the court down 28-12.

In the third quarter, the momentum switched. The Warriors made two quick 3-pointers to reduce the score to 32-20.

But Brookings was able to maintain the lead. By the end of the quarter, the score was 42-34.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Scott Redmond made a bucket and was fouled. He made the extra point to get the game to 42-37. A short time later, Cliff VanHook made a crucial 3-pointer to make the score 42-40.

He led Warrior scorers with 22 points, 20 of them in the second half.

With three minutes left in the game, Del Norte was down 48-43.

With around two minutes left, Cody Hoffman made a two and was fouled, scoring the extra point to cut the lead to 48-46 with about 2:30 left.

But the Bruins made two free throws to take a 50-46 lead.

Brookings-Harbor was able to prevent Del Norte from making a comeback and held on for the victory.

It was quite a different outcome when these two teams met at the Warrior Rotary Classic last month in Crescent City, with Del Norte winning 63-42.

Thursday evening, the Warriors partake in its first Big 5 conference game of the season, taking on Fortuna at home at 7:30 p.m.

In junior varsity action, Del Norte won 51-48 in overtime versus Brookings-Harbor.
