With only seconds left in a tied game, Bryce Lund was able to score to give the Del Norte High boys basketball team an exciting 40-38 win on the road versus Ferndale Thursday evening.

Lund led the Warriors with 18 points.

The Warriors (9-6) struggled early in the game before getting in the zone and finding a way to gain the victory.

While "it wasn't a pretty game," head coach Blaine Lopez said it's a positive anytime you get a win, especially on the road.

In the first quarter, Ferndale took a quick 8-2 lead in front of its enthusiastic home crowd.

By the end of the quarter, Del Norte was down 12-6.

At the start of the second quarter, Lund got the Warriors back into the game by nailing a 3-pointer to cut the lead to three.

The next few minutes, Del Norte could not capitalize, unable to get its offense going, before scoring with 4:25 left to cut the lead to 14-11.

Del Norte trailed 16-15 at the half.

In the third quarter, Ferndale struck quickly, including nailing a three to take a 21-15 lead.

The Warriors were able to get back in the game, including a score by Scott Redmond to cut the Wildcats lead to two.

Eventually, Del Norte was able to take it first lead, 23-21, with more than two minutes remaining in the quarter.

But Ferndale made sure the lead would be short-lived and came right back, making a two and a three-pointer to take the lead 26-23.

Right before the buzzer sounded at the end of the third quarter, Lund was able to get the ball into the air and made the shot to cut the lead to 26-25.

The fourth quarter started with both teams playing tough defense, with the score tied 27-27 with more than five minutes left in the game.

The Wildcats made two field goals to take a 29-27 lead. Del Norte was able to score for the next few minutes to take a 33-31 lead.

With the game tied at 38 with about 10 seconds remaining, the Warriors went down the court and Lund was able to make his game-winning shot.

Lopez said he was pleased with how his team played tough defense throughout the game.

He said his squad needs to improve on offense, especially during Big 5 Conference play, which begins next Thursday at home versus Fortuna.

"You got to win at home in league play," Lopez said. "You can't start behind the eight ball."

The Warriors play next Tuesday at Brookings-Harbor (Ore.).

In junior varsity action, Del Norte lost to Ferndale 51-47.
