The Del Norte High School girls basketball team broke a three-game skid by defeating Etna High at the Mt. Shasta Tournament Thursday night.

The Warriors (3-4), won the contest 46-41.

"It's good to have a victory," Head Coach Buzz McCulloch said. "The girls played well."

Last week, Del Norte dropped all three games at the Yvonne Rocha Tournament in Fortuna.

A key reason for the losses was lack of rebounding, turnovers and poor free throw shooting.

In the game versus Middletown, Del Norte committed 20 turnovers and shot 9-for-22 from the charity stripe.

Thursday night, the team did a much better job of rebounding and boxing out, McCulloch said. Free throw shooting was a little bit better, with the squad 16-for- 28 from the line.

Turnovers still plagued the Warriors, who committed 28 of them, including 10 in the fourth quarter.

"We just can't commit that many turnovers," he said. "We got away with this one. We've got to play the whole 32 minutes.... We just have to stay focused in the fourth."

The game started out well, with the Warriors jumping to a 5-0 lead.

"It was nice to get some confidence going," McCulloch said.

At the half, Del Norte led Etna 25-18. By the end of the third, the score was 38-31.

Despite the rash of turnovers in the fourth, Del Norte was able to preserve a five-point victory.

Kristie Gavin led Warrior scorers with 11 points.

Alyssa Luna contributed 10 points, while Ronni Scott and Heather Gill had eight points each.

Tonight, the Warriors play Mt. Shasta High at 5 p.m. If they win, the team will go on to the championship game Saturday evening. If they lose, Del Norte will play for third place.
