Boys basketball squad does well in tournament

Despite the absence of Head Coach Blaine Lopez and several players due to their involvement in the Del Norte High football game in the Bay Area on Saturday, the boys basketball team was able to make the championship game of the Boys Pacific Rim Tournament in Gold Beach, Ore. The Warriors finished with a 2-1 mark.

To compensate for the lack of players, members of the junior varsity team played in the games. The squad was coached by assistant coaches Gregory Yeager and David Brous.

The team won it's Friday game game 66-33. Bryce Lund led the way with 20 points. On Saturday, the Warriors defeated Illinois Valley (Ore.) 62-46. Cliff Vanhook paced the Warriors with 14 points. Scott Redmond scored 13 and Michael Daniels chipped in 12.

In the championship game Saturday evening, Del Norte lost to Phoenix (Ore.) by a score of 44-35. Daniels led the Warriors with 12 points. Lund had seven points in the loss.

"Overall, they gave a great effort," Yeager said. "The kids played hard."

To him, the team did a good job executing the offense despite the loss of players and not having much time working together as a unit.

A key, Yeager said, is to work on free throw shooting, which was a problem in the loss. The Warriors went 5-16 from the charity strip versus Phoenix.

Del Norte plays next in a tournament in Yreka on Thursday versus Lassen High School.
