Warrior Memories: Nat Parrott a special coach

We are about to start another  Del Norte Warrior football season. It’s the time of year that all Del Norte High fans look forward to.

I have never failed to be impressed by the number of our local citizens that donate their time to the youth of this community, not only at the high school but to all the youth programs in the area. For more years than I like to count Nat Parrott is one of those special people.

When you attend a Warrior junior varsity football game, you will see Nat on the sideline guiding the JV defense. Nat has worked as the defensive coordinator under Steve Luis for about nine years.

Before joining the high school staff, he worked with Doug “Pop” Gaines in the youth program for 10 years. For many years Nat not only volunteered his time to football programs, but also coached in the youth wrestling program.

Nat is a 1968 graduate of North Bend High School in Oregon, where he played his high school athletics as a North Bend Bulldog.

While he is not a Del Norte graduate he still has Warrior blood running in his veins. His children are all Del Norte High graduates. Nat has been involved with the Warriors for so long that this year his grandson is playing for the Warrior Freshman team.

When I ask Nat why he keeps giving so much time he basically had two real good reasons. First, he said working with young people keeps him young and he really enjoys following their careers to see what they become later in the program and what they do after graduation. Second, he said this community has given so much to his family that he wants to be able to give back as much as he can.

Nat works for Del Norte Tire and is fortunate to have a boss that also is a real Warrior in Dan Barnts, who allows Nat time to do the pastime he enjoys so much. Thank you Nat, your efforts are really appreciated.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors, had an illustrious  career on the gridiron at Humboldt State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a number of years before retiring.
