Warrior Memories: 1977 DN Warrior graduate Belinda Allen Vanderpool

Belinda Allen Vanderpool  was a 1977 graduate of Del Norte High School. She was in school when interscholastic sports for girls were just starting. Unfortunately, for many years girls were limited to just intramural sports.

It was great that the state finally realized that girls like Belinda deserved the same opportunities that boys enjoyed for years. While in high school Belinda played four years of basketball, three years of track, three years of cross country, one year of softball and one year of volleyball.

The school had fall, winter and spring seasons, and she was busy in all of them.

After high school graduation Belinda enrolled at College of the Redwoods in Eureka where she continued her athletic career. At C.R. she played two years of basketball, two years of volleyball and one year of softball. She is really a true multi-talented young lady.

Her outstanding performance on the basketball court resulted in this modest young lady being inducted into the College of the Redwoods athletic hall of fame for that sport.

After leaving College of the Redwoods, Belinda returned to Crescent City where she took her talents into the coaching profession.

For the Warriors she has worked in the basketball, volleyball and softball programs mostly as an assistant but did take over the softball program for a year. She really enjoyed working with Debbie and Pablo Lorenzi and Kathleen Anderson.

She really praised them for what they taught her about how to work with young athletes. I was really impressed with her understanding of what it takes to deal with the varied personalities of teenage youth. It is not always easy but it is rewarding.

Belinda is another example of the classy athletes that have returned to our community and shared their talents with our youth.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt State University. Trone was head football coach at Del Norte High for a number of years before retiring.
