Tthe name Blackburn goes back a long way for Warrior fans, since Chuck Blackburn first started teaching at Redwood School in the late 1950s.

Chuck has a son, Danny, that was a true multi-sport performer for the blue and gold of Del Norte. When Dan entered high school in the fall of 1974, he got involved in sports right away. Former Warrior coach Larry Amos said from the day Danny entered school he was an outstanding teammate, an excellent athlete and fun to be around.

Danny played football, basketball and golf all four years. During his senior year he played on the football team that defeated Eureka for the first time since 1964.

Recently, I talked to Stacy Morgan, who was the quarterback on that team. He said that one of his favorite things to do was get behind his brother Rowdy, an outstanding offensive lineman, and throw passes to Danny, who could catch anything that came close. Dan was also an important part of the 1978 varsity basketball team that won the league championship and was coached by longtime Warrior Dale Thomas.

After graduating from Del Norte, Danny went off to college at Chico State, where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree. After college Dan returned to Del Norte and worked for four years as an assistant to Kirk Burrows in the varsity basketball program. He also served as the golf coach for four years and his 1997 golf team won the league championship. The golf team also came close to another championship, but 1997 was the last time it made it to No. 1.

Dan married Starr Whalen, daughter of former Warrior coach and administrator Mike Whalen and longtime Del Norte teacher Doris Whalen. Dan and Starr have three children, a girl, Chase 9, Cole 6, and Bliss, 3. Dan now works for Steve Hendricks at Western Family Insurance, Steve is another Warrior graduate that is a great supporter of Warrior athletics and one of the top sponsors of the Del Norte Athletic Hall of Fame.

We look forward to more future Warriors to come from the Blackburn family.
