Eight other local students have been selected for the annual award that honors a commitment to service to others and strong leadership skills. All will receive their awards before the end of this school year and the Triplicate will publish all their names in an upcoming Neighbors section.
Although principal Lara Hirt was kind enough to put me at the beginning of the program so I could get to work, the spirit of the event held me captive and I stayed for well over an hour. I enjoyed being in an elementary school environment again, and it brought back memories of assemblies I attended for my own children years ago.
Kindergarteners wore headbands boasting “perfect attendance” and clapped along with the standing-room-only crowd of students, teachers, parents and grandparents as each winner’s name was announced and Mrs. Hirt shared some information about his or her accomplishments.
The students accepted their awards, some modestly, others with exuberance, then climbed onto risers to face the applauding crowd and pose for photos during their moment of fame.
