Longtime Del Norte volleyball coaches Pablo and Debbie Lorenzo will return to the Warriors as co-head coaches for the 2012 season, the Lorenzis confirmed Wednesday.

The Lorenzis replace Robyn Parker, who stepped down from the position after the 2011 season.

Debbie Lorenzi coached Del Norte from 1980 to 2005, stepping down for medical reasons but continuing to volunteer her expertise in recent seasons.

Pablo Lorenzi has worked with the volleyball team since 1987 and has also coached the Warriors’ football, softball and track and field teams. (The couple married in 1982.) He stepped down in 2010 as the Del Norte baseball coach, after 15 non-consecutive seasons.

The Warriors won the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 championship in each of the final 16 years of Lorenzi’s tenure, with the streak extending to 21 years before being snapped in 2010.

“I’m happy to do it,” Debbie Lorenzi said in an interview Wednesday. “The plan is to do it for a couple of years, until one of the ex-players can take it over.”

Former Warriors volleyball players Jennifer Larson, Megan McMillan and Meagan Curtis will serve as volunteer assistant coaches during the season, according to the Lorenzis. Larson and Curtis have previous head coaching and assistant coaching experience at Del Norte.

All three have experience playing college volleyball: Larson at Colorado, McMillan at Oregon State and Curtis at California State University, Chico, respectively.

Under Parker, the Warriors finished with a 14-16 overall record (3-5 in Big 5 play) in 2011.

“It’s a good group of kids,” said Pablo Lorenzi, a U.S. history teacher at Del Norte High School. “That makes it better. It’ll be interesting; it’ll be a challenge.

“Some of the things that helped us decide to come back were the former players. It’s nice to have those people come back and help the program.”

Del Norte athletic director Randy Fugate was unavailable for comment Wednesday.

The Lorenzis have scheduled a volleyball clinic for interested grade-schoolers in Del Norte County, which will take place June 25–27 at Del Norte High. Registration forms are available at Mary Peacock Elementary School, Pine Grove Elementary School, Joe Hamilton Elementary School, Redwood School, Crescent Elk Middle School and Smith River Elementary School.
