Morgan Laney made the final throw of her Del Norte High School track and field career count for a lot at the California Interscholastic Federation State Track Meet, held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.

Laney, the Warriors’ school record holder in the shot put, finished 12th overall in preliminary competition with a put of 40 feet even, two inches off her personal best. She fell short of a top-nine placement, which would have enabled her to compete in the event finals on Saturday.

“I feel pretty good,” Laney said. “I was really happy to be one of the 40-foot shot putters. (Throwing that distance) was what I wanted to do. It went pretty well.”

The girls’ shot put competition was held during the hottest part of Saturday, with temperatures reaching triple digits at the track’s surface.

“I was trying to keep cool as much as I could before I threw,” Laney said.

Her first throw traveled 36 feet, 11 inches. Laney improved upon that mark in the second throw (38-10), unleashing the 40-foot throw on her third and final attempt..

“She kept getting better,” said Del Norte assistant coach Doug Wakefield. “It’s too bad she didn’t get three more throws. She was looking good.”

Laney, who will attend Sacramento State in the fall on a partial athletic scholarship, improved on her 2011 state track meet appearance by four places, another of her personal goals entering the meet.

“I feel like it’s a good ending to my season,” she said, “and I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my life in Sacramento.”
