Bess Maxwell students Mary Smith, front left, and Emily Herrera, hold a thank-you poster. Pictured in back from left: Katy Cunningham, principal of Bess Maxwell, teacher Martha Albro, and Del Norte Sunrise Rotary members John Ging, Ben Cameron, Brent Hoskinson and Ron Phillips. Submitted Del Norte Sunrise Rotary Club was recognized at a Bess Maxwell student assembly recently for the club’s restoration of the school’s United States map.
Over the course of several weekends in May, volunteers from the club restored a large-scale map of the contiguous United States, Alaska and Hawaii, that is located on the school’s playground.
During the assembly, the Sunrise Rotary Club was presented a large
“thank you” poster that was signed by every student and staff member at
Bess Maxwell School. On that poster is a photograph of all Bess Maxwell
students gathered around the borders of the restored map. In addition,
all the third-grade students wrote thank- you letters. When the school
principal asked the assembled students who wanted to thank the Sunrise
Rotary Club, every student raised a hand.
