Author Michael Kauffmann will talk about and sign his book, “Conifer Country,” Sunday starting at noon at Jefferson State Books, 299 I St.

Afterward, he will lead a short interpretive walk on the Little Bald Hills Trail in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park to view some of the numerous coniferous trees of the park.

“Conifer Country” is a guide focusing on the 35 conifers that grow in the Klamath Mountains and its watersheds stretching from the Pacific Coast to Ashland and Redding. The author made a point of walking every trail described in the book at least twice so as to provide an accurate field guide to the region. Color photographs and trail maps with elevation profiles make this a useful tool for exploration.

The book was produced in association with the Redwood Science Project at Humboldt State University and the North Coast Chapter of the California Native Plant Society.

The presentation and the walk are free.  Those joining the author on the walk should wear sturdy shoes and carry water.  Car pools to the trailhead at the east end of Howland Hill Road are advised.

Additional information is available by calling the bookstore at 464-7800.
