Warrior Memories: He’d hit you with a smile on his face

Most old-time Crescent City residents, when they see the name Endert, are probably reminded of Endert’s Drug Store, which was located in the middle of the town for more years than I can count.

When I hear the name Endert, I think of a former Warrior football teammate. I can still see Roger in his leather helmet with no facemask and with a big grin on his face.

Roger was a lineman for the 1950 and 1951 Warriors, and I can’t ever remember seeing him when he wasn’t smiling. Since I was a senior and Roger was a junior I only had the fun of playing one season with him.

He may have always been smiling, but he was tough and would knock you down with a smile on his face.

After Roger graduated in 1952 he enrolled at Humboldt State in the fall and I had the privilege of being his teammate again as he joined the Lumberjack football team. He had the fun of being part of the 1952 Lumberjacks that won the Far Western Conference Championship.

While in high school Roger was very active in school activities other than athletics. As a junior he was elected vice president of the student council. This was just one of the many activities he enjoyed. He was also very active in the “D” Club, which worked hard to raise money to support Warrior athletics.

Roger was also in the band and on the staff putting out the yearbook each year. This did not keep him busy enough, so he devoted a lot of time to the Rally Club, which supported all Warrior activities.

With everything else he  did, he still found time to be involved in 4-H and one year raised the Grand Champion Beef that he showed at the county fair.

I lost track of Roger years ago, but with our class reunion coming up I hope to reconnect with him. He was a great Warrior and Lumberjack.

Dick Trone writes on his reflections and the history of Del Norte High Warrior sports. Trone, who played football for the Warriors and graduated in 1951, had an illustrious career on the gridiron at Humboldt State University. Trone was football head coach at Del Norte High for a number of years before retiring.
