Warrior Memories: DN reunion: Teammates of yesteryear

When we had the reunion of Del Norte High School for classes 1946–1952 last Saturday, I had the opportunity to connect with former teammates that I had not seen since they graduated.

Bill Stevenson was one such teammate, a 1949 Warrior grad and one of the really great teammates that I had the privilege of playing with while at Del Norte. Bill looked great, almost like he could still put on the pads and helmet with no face mask and take to the field again.

He played while the Warriors still wore red and white. He was an excellent running back and defensive back, playing as a junior under coach Telmud Kramer and as a senior under coach Brick Bralich — each of these coaches were only at Del Norte for one year.

When football season would end Bill would head to the basketball court, playing with teammates Harry Trehearne and Dick Turner. In Bill’s senior year the Warriors basketball team was able to defeat Eureka for the first time in a long time.

After graduation Bill married one the prettiest girls in the senior class, Betty Chaplin. Betty was and is still a pretty redhead. She was also very active in the Girls Athletic Association (GAA), but what I remember her best for is playing the trumpet in the band. She was good. I was a sophomore at the time playing the baritone.

It was really great to see Bill and Betty at the reunion. They had just celebrated 62 years of marriage.

Bill worked for many years in the trucking business and is now retired and living in Redding. I was so excited about seeing them and talking old times I forgot to ask them about family — shame on me.

Reunions can sure be fun and this one was really special, as I got to see Bill and many other former classmates and teammates who I had not seen in a long time.
